History Day

A little reminder that History Day is on this Monday.

Pupils have been asked to dress up as a Polar Explorer as part of their North and South Pole topic. A number of parents have asked if their children could dress up as a Roman from their previous Romans topic and this also would be perfect.

Mental Darts?

This morning P3/4 were using some of their mental maths strategies to work out darts totals.



We were learning about doubles and trebles. We also learned about finishing with a double score.



The final task that they were given was to find out how to score a perfect 9 dart finish.

This afternoon we had fun looking for mini-beasts in the playground. It's amazing what you can find!

Mental Maths Homework

We have been looking a number of strategies that we could use to work out mental calculations. Tonight the pupils have been given 8 sums to correct. They need to write down the correct answer. They are not allowed to write down any workings but need to try to work it out using some of the techniques learned in class.

A little example.

28 + 17 =

How could we do this?

Possible Method 1 -

add the tens then the units.

20 + 10 = 30
8 + 7 = 15
15 + 30 = 45

Possible Method 2 -

Add 2 to 28 to make 30. Take 2 away at the end.

28 + 17
30 +17 = 47
47-2 = 45

The Tall Ship

Primary 3/4 had an excellent trip to the Tall Ship in Glasgow on Tuesday. We had a recorded guided tour of the Glenlee and learned lots about life on a ship.


The children then took part in a workshop learning about some of the countries the Glenlee had visited.



They were spit into groups and had to had to create a small play teaching the other groups about the country that they were studying. The children had a great time and so did I!

Library Visit

This morning we visited the Central Library. The librarians gave the children a tour of the children's library. They then split the children into two groups and looked at the North and South Poles.

Fun World

As the weather was s bad today we cancelled our gym session in Largs. The boys and girls still got plenty of exercise as we took them to Fun World. They can record this hour of exercise on their fitness diaries.

A little reminder that the class will be visiting the Central Library on Monday and the Tall Ship on Tuesday.

Friday PE

Our PE session will be outside tomorrow so wrap up nice warm and remember your rain jacket just incase it's wet.

Extra Trip

I have organised an additional trip on Monday 19th March to the Central Library. The class will be taking part in a number of interesting activities during their visit.

RSPB

Primary 3/4 had an excellent trip today at the RSPB Centre in Lochwinnoch. The children learned all about mini beasts and their habitats.



There was plenty of opportunity for the the children to get their hands dirty during the practical sessions.

The children


looked for mini beasts in woodland areas, grassland areas as well as in the pond.

Friday Morning

This morning we worked on reading and prepared our pages for next week.




We worked on some problem solving activities using the calculator.




We then went to Largs for gym and played some big hall games and on some crazy obstacles.

This week Primary 3/4 have been learning how to use the calculator in Maths. We having been learning how to do +,-,x sums.








Today we used our skills to do a number of problem solving activities.

Sky News

Sky News were in the school today reporting on our iPad deployment. The report should be on the news today from 5pm.

RSPB Centre Lochwinnoch

Primary 3/4 will be visiting the RSPB Centre in Lochwinnoch on Monday 12th March. The activities will be mainly outside so pupils should wear trip uniform and suitable waterproofs if needed. Wellies or boots are recommended. Pupils will returning to school for lunch but may be back a little later than usual so a packed lunch should be brought to school on this day.

Here's hoping for a nice warm day!

Excellent News Homework

In Argentina today a big lump of ice from the Perito Moreno Glacier broke off. The huge lump of ice is a whopping 70 metres tall but grows in size thoughout the year and can grow big enough to separate the lake in two. The Perito Moreno glacier is one of the few glaciers in the world that isn't shrinking. The last time a piece of the ice broke off was in 2008, so the tourists were pretty lucky to catch a glimpse of it!

It looked very exciting I would have liked to have been there.

Recreating the Masters

This afternoon we looked at two famous painting and tried to recreate these using our iPads. The first painting we looked was by Kandinsky. 

Each pupil took one square and using Art Rage produced their own circles. We made this -



After this we looked at Van Gogh's Starry Night and plot the painting into 15 pieces. Each children was given a small section to copy and enlarge on their iPad.




The children are still working on this and I am looking forward to seeing the final result.

Sports Hall Games

This morning the class were taught a lot of new games and had a great time at gym.



The class used the double hall this morning and had to work very hard. Great fun!
